Mrs Parker has three children and a very sick husband. Grace, the eldest daughter, is not growing any younger - and still without a husband. Elsie the younger daughter, has married a black man, which Mrs Parker resents, and so does not allow her in the house. Len, the son, has according to Grace been the spoilt and pampered one, although his wife Muriel defends him. Family tensions increase, but Mrs Parkers attitude is abruptly altered by the death of her husband; Grace may marry the man who has waited for her so patiently. Elsie may come in and give her mother a hand whenever she wishes. Mrs Parker, refusing assistance, climbs the staits to go to her dead husband.
